Offense Explodes in Women’s Soccer’s Shutout Over FIU

9/29/2019 5:34:00 PM | Women's Soccer

McVicker recorded first win and shutout

MIAMI, Fla. – Marshall women's soccer (3-8-0, 1-2-0) trumps FIU, 6-0, in Miami behind freshman goalkeeper Courtney McVicker's clean sheet and a two goal and two assist day from Marah Abu-Tayeh.

The 6-0 was the Herd's largest margin of victory in a shutout on the road since a 10-0 win at St. Peter's on Aug. 27, 2006 and largest margin of victory since a 10-0 home win over Delaware State on Sept. 25, 2007. Today's win was Marshall's first on the road this season.

"They played well," Marshall head coach Kevin Long said after the team's victory at FIU. "We were consistently dangerous in attack and very safe defensively. We played 90-full minutes of good soccer to lead into next weekend."

McVicker made her first save of the contest 10:26 into the contest. Seven minutes later M. Abu-Tayeh fired the Herd's first shot on target and scored to give MU a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.

Marshall continued the barrage when Morgan White found the back of the goal at 24:29 for her first career goal, which was assisted by M. Abu-Tayeh.

Metztli Gonzalez then closed out the half with her first goal of the season in the 43rd minute to put the Herd up 3-0.

MU started the second half on fire with goals in three consecutive minutes as M. Abu Tayeh scored her second of the game, Rebekah Cook hit the target and it benefited from an own goal by the Panthers between the 55th and 57th minutes. M. Abu-Tayeh also recorded her second assist of the contest on Cook's goal.

The Herd outshot the Panthers 13-8, including 8-4 in shots on goal, as McVicker made four saves in the shutout. Marshall also won the corner battle 4-2.

In addition to the goals scored, Farah Abu-Tayeh and Stephanie Cuan each recorded shots on target, while M. Tayeh had two additional shots, F. Abu-Tayeh, Gonzalez and Rene Ross all had other shots which missed the mark.
