Fourth Inning Dooms Herd Baseball At Virginia Tech

3/4/2020 8:08:00 PM | Baseball

7 unearned runs allowed

BLACKSBURG, Va.—One bad inning of defensive miscues was the difference as Marshall baseball (1-9-1) lost 10-5 to Virginia Tech (8-3) Wednesday night at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park.

The Thundering Herd scored in the opening frame for the fifth time this season. Junior Geordon Blanton led off with a single, stole 2nd base, and took 3rd on a wild pitch. He scored on a RBI groundout from Jordon Billups.

Virginia Tech responded with a lead-off home run to begin the bottom half of the inning and immediately tie the game.

The game would remain a stalemate until the fourth inning when Virginia Tech scored eight runs, seven of which were unearned. The Hokies scored eight runs on four hits and two errors. Three walks and one passed ball additionally led to the downfall, as Marshall found itself down 9-1.

The Herd added three runs in the sixth inning on three hits. Nick Jodway and Jaren Lovely each drove in runs on RBI singles and Sam Linscott added a RBI on a fielder's choice to cut the deficit to five.

The Hokies added one more run in the bottom of the eighth, and Marshall's brief attempt at a comeback resulted in one run but no further damage in the ninth. Luke Edwards earned a RBI on a fielder's choice groundout, scoring pinch-runner Hunter Fansler.

Sophomore Ryan Capuano suffered the loss in the start (0-2). He was chased in the fourth inning, pitching a season-high 3.2 innings allowing just three hits. Of the six runs in his score line, just two were earned. He struck out two Hokies.

Robert Kwiatkowski had another strong outing in relief. He entered the contest in the seventh with the bases-loaded and no outs, and struck out two and forced a fly out to end the threat unscathed.

Graduate transfer Josh Zeboskey made his Marshall debut in the contest.

Marshall will be back in action this weekend for a four-game set with the Akron Zips. First pitch for Friday's game at the Kennedy Center Field is set for 2 p.m.
