CARBONDALE, Ill. – Marshall baseball (3-6) dropped game two in Carbondale, 7-2, as No. 27 Southern Illinois (16-1) clinched the series on Saturday.

Marshall starting pitcher Raymond Pacella issued a pair of walks to start the game. After a pair of steals and a foul out, he caught a Saluki trying to steal home. However, Tristan Peters dealt a two-out, RBI single to give SIU an early 1-0 lead after the first inning.

After Pacella set the Salukis down 1-2-3 in the second, MU shortstop Geordon Blanton doubled down the left-field line. Center fielder Luke Edwards then smoked a ball to left center for a triple, scoring Blanton to tie the game 1-1 in the top of the third.

Southern Illinois answered after the Herd scored with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the third to take a 4-1 lead.

With two outs in the top of the fourth, catcher Kyle Schaefer doubled to right center and right fielder Jordon Billups smoked a ball to the same place for a double to cut the Herd's deficit to 4-2. However, the Salukis had another multi-run inning by adding two in the bottom of fourth to extend its lead to 6-2.

Pacella threw a scoreless frame in the bottom of the fifth before exiting the game.

Trey Alderman and Ryan Capuano came out of the bullpen for the Herd combining to give up just two hits and a walk in the final three innings, giving up just one run as the Herd offense was held scoreless in the last five innings of play.
