Herd Baseball Drops Series Finale at No. 27 SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Marshall baseball (3-7) came up short in the series finale at No. 27 Southern Illinois (17-1) on Sunday 2-0 in Carbondale, Ill.

Centerfielder Luke Edwards collected a one-out single in the top of the first, but the Herd couldn't advance him. Marshall starting pitcher John Cheatwood gave up a pair of singles in the bottom of the first, but retired the Salukis without giving up a run.

Cheatwood worked the next two innings without giving up a run, including a 1-2-3 bottom of the third.

In the bottom of the fourth, SIU used a Vinnie Massaglia leadoff double and a one-out sacrifice fly by J.T. Weber to get on the board as Marshall trailed 1-0.

The Salukis strung again the next inning as Nick Neville and Tristan Peters recorded back-to-back, two-out doubles off Cheatwood to put the Herd down 2-0. MU reliever Jeffrey Purnell came and walked his first batter, but got the next to ground out to end the inning.

Marshall got hits from leftfielder Cyrus Grimes in the sixth, and designated hitter Cole Williams singled in the eighth along with a Grimes walk, but couldn't muster any runs.

MU's Purnell, Nick Jodway, Ayden Hodges and D'Andre Knight combined to give up just two hits and two walks in the 3.1 out of the bullpen.

Then in the top of the ninth, second baseman Travis Sankovich singles with two outs and first baseman Zach Inskeep followed with a two-out walk to have runners at first and second. However, catcher Kyle Schaefer struck out to end the game.

UP NEXT
The Herd is scheduled to be back on the field Tuesday to play host to WVU at the Kennedy Center on Route 2. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
