Marshall Baseball Begins Conference USA Action at Florida Atlantic

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University baseball team (4-7) heads to Boca Raton, Fla., to take on the Florida Atlantic Owls (10-9) in a four-game set to begin Conference USA play starting on Friday.

Marshall defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers for the first time since 2015, 7-1, on Tuesday at the Kennedy Center.

It was the first time since 1988 WVU visited Huntington.

Junior shortstop Geordon Blanton led the game off with a homer, his first of the season.

Sophomore catcher Kyle Schaefer launched a three-run shot in the bottom of third, his third of the season.

Marshall started first 5.2 of the game without giving up a hit to the Mountineers.

Freshman designated hitter Cole Williams and sophomore centerfielder Luke Edwards each went 2-for-4.

Freshman catcher Ryan Leitch leads MU in home runs and RBI with five and nine, respectively. Schaefer is second on the team in both categories with three dingers and seven RBI.

Senior closer D'Andre Knight has thrown 5.2 scoreless innings and has two saves this season.

Scouting FAU
FAU has a record of 10-9 this season. The Owls won a three-game series with then-ranked No. 24 Central Florida to start the season.

Nolan Schanuel does it all for FAU leading the team in batting average (.338), home runs (five), RBI (25) and stolen bases (2).

Hunter Cooley has the team's best ERA among qualifying pitchers at 3.63. He's made eight appearances, one start, and has a record of 3-1.
