Herd Baseball Falls in Doubleheader at FAU

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Marshall baseball (4-10, 0-3 C-USA) comes up short in both games of a double header on Saturday to the Florida Atlantic Owls (13-9, 3-0 C-USA) in Boca Raton, Fla.
Game 1
Marshall starting pitcher Chad Heiner got into a jam in the bottom of the first with the bases full of Owls and no outs. Heiner worked through the inning giving up just one run.
Heiner had a 1-2-3 bottom of the second, but FAU struck for another run in the third as the Herd trailed 2-0.
After scoreless frames for both sides in the fourth, Marshall came to bat in the top of the fifth. Right fielder Jordon Billups and shortstop Geordon Blanton led the inning off with each getting walked. Then the bases were loaded after second baseman Travis Sankovich was hit by a pitch with no outs. With one out, catcher Kyle Schaefer drew a four-pitch walk to score MU's first run of the game. Two batters later, a wild pitch scored Blanton and a two-out single by first baseman Zach Inskeep gave Marshall a 3-2 lead.
Heiner recorded the first two outs in the bottom of the fifth before being pulled for relieve Nick Adkins after giving up a walk. The next batter hit a homer as FAU led 4-3.
The Owls added an insurance run in the sixth as the Herd fell 5-3.
Game 2
Marshall didn't wait long to get the bats going in game two as Blanton led the game off with a double and Sankovich moved him over to third on a line out to right. Centerfielder Luke Edwards brought home Blanton on a sacrifice fly as third baseman Peter Hutzal followed with a homer to put the Herd up 2-0. MU starting pitcher Raymond Pacella then struck out the side to start his outing in the bottom of the inning.
After Pacella retired three more batters via strikeout in the bottom of the second after hitting a batter, Inskeep brought in a pair of runs on a two-out double to give Marshall a 4-0 lead.
The junior lefty continued his dominance on the mound, striking out another two Owls as he started the game striking out seven of his first 10 batters faced.
After designated hitter Cole Williams led off the fourth with a single, Kyle Schaefer launched his fourth homer of the season over the fence in right to put the Herd up 6-0.
Pacella retired the first two batters in the fifth after a 1-2-3 fourth, but a Blanton error extended the inning and a pair of unearned runs eventually scored in the inning, cutting the Marshall lead to 6-2.
After Pacella threw a perfect bottom of the six and the Herd went scoreless in the top of the seventh, MU led 6-2 heading into the bottom half of the seventh inning.
Pacella issued a walk and gave up a double to begin the frame as he was pulled for reliever D'Andre Knight. FAU scored five runs to complete, two with two outs, a 7-6 comeback over the Herd.

The Herd will look to salvage the series in the fourth and final game at FAU on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
