Herd Baseball Is Back
Head coach Jeff Waggoner begins his 15th season at the helm of the Thundering Herd. He returns four position players who started all 16 games in 2020's abbreviated season (Zach Inskeep, Geordon Blanton, Jordon Billups, Luke Edwards).
Inskeep returns after leading the squad in 2020 in batting average (.328) and hits (20). Blanton and fellow returner Peter Hutzal each tallied 19 hits. Another returning bat is Jaren Lovely, who co-led with Blanton with two home runs. Billups led the Herd in doubles with five.
On the mound for Marshall, the Herd returns five starters who combined for 12 of the 16 starts in 2020 (Brady Choban, 4; Ryan Capuano, 3; Jeffrey Purnell, 3; John Cheatwood, 1; Cody Sharp, 1). Purnell and Cheatwood are each expected to start this weekend.
Michael Guerrero, D'Andre Knight, Trey Alderman and Nick Jodway return as relievers who threw 6.0 innings or more out of the bullpen.
Scouting The Eagles
Morehead State is coming off a 5-2 win over the No. 1 ranked Louisville Cardinals Tuesday night.
Senior catcher Jack Gardner leads MSU in nearly every statistical category offensively, leading in hits (8), average (.348), OPS (.922), SLG% (.478) and RBI (5). Infielders Stephen Hill and Bryce Hensor and outfielder Ryan Layne have started all seven games alongside Gardner.
Three pitchers for the Eagles have started two games apiece: Jason Goe, Luke Helton and Will Lozinak.
Morehead State began the year losing three games in as many days to Conference USA foe Charlotte in North Carolina. Last weekend, the Eagles split a doubleheader with a team the Thundering Herd will see next weekend, Ohio.
