Herd Baseball Drops Season Opener to Buckeyes in Florida

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Marshall baseball (0-1) opened the 2022 season in a loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes (1-0), 15-4, on Friday afternoon at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida.

OSU started the scoring with a homer by shortstop Zach Dezenzo in the bottom of the first. Herd starting pitcher Raymond Pacella settled down and struck out the side in the bottom of the second.

Marshall used two-out lightning in the top of the third. Shortstop Geordon Blanton drew a two-out walk and moved to third on a single by first baseman Kyle Schaefer. Blanton then scored on an error by the Buckeye third baseman on a ball put in play by centerfielder Luke Edwards to tie the game. The next half inning Pacella got in a jam with the bases loaded and one out, but he induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning and keep the game tied 1-1.

Ohio State went back on top with a solo homerun by Drew Reckert in the bottom of the fourth. Pacella's day came to end after four innings. He gave up just two runs while striking out eight.

OSU struck for eight runs, five unearned, in the bottom of the fifth as it led 10-1. Carter Lyles came on in relief in the bottom of the sixth. Lyles worked around a leadoff single to throw a scoreless inning.

The Buckeyes added three runs to its lead in the bottom of the seventh.

Second baseman Christian Lucio brought home a pair of runs in the top of the eighth with a double and designated hitter Cole Williams sent Lucio home with a double to right as MU trailed 13-4.

Ohio State plated another two runs the next half inning.

Buckeye starter Isaiah Coupet earned the win going 6.0 innings, giving up just one unearned run on three hits. He struck out 11 batters.
