PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Marshall baseball (1-2) split a doubleheader with the BYU Cougars (1-2) on Saturday at the Snowbird Classic taking game one, 6-3, and falling in game two, 3-2, in Port Charlotte, Florida.

"We saw a lot of great things today," Herd baseball head coach Jeff Waggoner said after the pair of games. "Our guys battled all day against a really good BYU team. It was a long day starting at noon and ending at 11 p.m. tonight. We have a quick turnaround against Indiana State tomorrow."

Game 1 – Marshall 6, BYU 3
After the Cougars struck for the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first, Herd starting pitcher Jeffrey Purnell settled down in the second. He threw a scoreless frame, striking out two batters.

Marshall picked up its starting pitcher in the top of the third. Second baseman Christian Lucio led off with a single to right. Designated hitter Cole Williams followed with a single left, sending Lucio to third. Third baseman Travis Sankovich doubled home Lucio as the Herd had a pair of runners in scoring position with no outs.

Shortstop Geordon Blanton drew a walk to load the bases. After a pair of MU batters struck out, catcher Ryan Leitch stepped up to the plate with two outs. The Canadian smoked a pitch to left, clearing the bases with a double to put Marshall up 4-2.

Purnell closed out his outing with scoreless third and fourth frames to keep the Herd lead at 4-2. The righty sent six Cougars down on strikes in his four innings of work.

Purnell made way for Louis Davenport in the bottom of the fifth. Davenport hit the first two batters of the inning, but stranded a pair of BYU runners on the bases to keep the Herd lead at two. Davenport continued his momentum into the sixth as he threw another scoreless frame by getting a double play after giving up a leadoff single.

Davenport closed out his relief appearance with a pair of strikeouts in a scoreless bottom of the seventh.

The two-out lightning for Marshall continued in the top of the eighth. The Herd had runners at first second after Blanton led off the inning with a single and right fielder Jordon Billups drew a two-out walk. Lucio stepped to the plate, smacked the ball to left, and cleared the bases with a triple to put MU up 6-2.

Cole Agemy came on from the bullpen to start the bottom half of the eighth. After giving up a run, he induced an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play to keep Marshall on top 6-3.

After Blanton tripled and was stranded at third in the top of the ninth, Agemy returned to the hill in the bottom half of the inning and threw a scoreless frame to preserve the Herd victory.

BYU struck for a run in the first and plated a pair of runs in the third to take a 3-2 advantage.

Herd starter Zac Addkison went three innings as he gave up three runs, one unearned, on five hits. He struck out eight Cougars.

After reaching on an error, Leitch scored on an error committed by third baseman Austin Deming on a ball put in play by Billups to cut the deficit to 3-1 after the seventh.
