Box Score
Â
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Behind great pitching and an explosion at the plate, the Marshall University baseball team (5-3) closed the Snowbird Classic with an 11-1 win over the St. Bonaventure Bonnies (0-4) on Sunday in Port Charlotte, Florida.
Â
"I'm proud of our guys this weekend," Marshall baseball head coach Jeff Waggoner said after the victory. "We played well in all phases of the game. This team is fun to be around, cares about each other and wants to be really good."
Â
Shortstop Geordon Blanton began the ballgame by reaching on an error and stealing second. Catcher Kyle Schaefer then smoked a pitch to right center for a double scoring Blanton to give MU an early 1-0 lead. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Schaefer scored on a ground out by center fielder Luke Edwards to go up 2-0.
Â
Herd starting pitcher Ryan Capuano then threw a scoreless bottom of the first, striking out one and stranding a runner at first.
Â
In the top of the second, first baseman Daniel Carinci led off the inning with a homer to put Marshall up 3-0. After a single by right fielder Jordon Billups, a single and stolen base by Blanton and a walk issued to Edwards, Marshall had the bases loaded with two outs. Designated hitter Ryan Leitch then reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Billups. MU led 4-0 after two innings.
Â
The Herd offense caught fire again in the fourth inning. Schaefer and Edwards each drew walks to lead off the frame. A wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position and another wild pitch scored Schaefer and moved Edwards to third with Leitch at the plate. Leitch then launched his second homer of the season to left to score a pair of runs and put Marshall on top 7-0.
Â
Schaefer carried his hot bat into his next plate appearance in the sixth as he hit his third homer of the season to center to begin the inning. Zach Gardiner pinch hit for Leitch, drew a walk and advanced to second on a balk. One batter later, second baseman Christian Lucio doubled to right center, sending Gardiner across home to extend the lead to 9-0.
Â
Capuano had an excellent outing that came to an end after six innings of work. The Canadian righty struck out nine Bonnies and after giving up a hit in the first, retired the final 16 batters he faced in the contest.
Â
Marshall's hot-hitting leadoff hitter continued into the seventh when Elijah Vogelsong hit the first home run of his career to put the Herd advantage to 10-0. It was Marshall's third leadoff long-ball in the game
Â
Relief pitcher Carter Lyles came on from the bullpen in the bottom of the seventh for Capuano. He threw a scoreless frame as he ended it with a strikeout.
Â
Marshall's shutout came to an end in the bottom of the eighth when Danny Manion brought home a SBU run on an RBI double off Lyles. However, an Edwards single scored Eddie Leon in the ninth to put the lead back to 10, 11-1.
Â
Left-handed reliever Cody Sharp threw a perfect ninth inning, including a strikeout, to close the game for the Herd.
