Cabrera records three RBI, Harlow strikes out seven

HOOVER, Ala. – The Marshall University baseball team (2-0) clinched the opening series of the 2023 season with an 8-4 win over the Saint Louis Billikens (0-2) on Saturday in Hoover, Alabama.
"This was a good win and learning experience," Herd head coach Greg Beals said after winning the first series of his Marshall tenure. "We need to be able to win close games and learn how we did it. The guys played with great intensity, made plays defensively and executed offensively when we needed it."
With the game tied 4-4 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Marshall caught two-out lighting. Gio Ferraro singled up the middle and Luke Edwards was hit-by-a-pitch to put runners at first and second. Kyle Schaefer then singled to left center to score Ferraro and put the Herd on top 5-4.
Drew Harlow threw some big innings for the Green and White out of the bullpen. Harlow came on in relief of Raymond Pacella with one-out in the top of the fifth when the score was still knotted 4-4. The Hailfax, Virginia, native threw three scoreless frames and struck seven of the 11 Billikens he faced while allowing just one hit to earn his first win of the season.
Ryan Capuano closed out the final 1.2 innings, allowing no hits and one walk with three strikeouts, including two in the top of the ninth to earn his first save of 2023.
MU added a trio of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to help the bullpen out as Edwards recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice, Gabriela Cabrera recorded a run-scoring single and Schaefer crossed home on a wild pitch.
The Herd got the scoring started in the bottom of the first. Ferraro led off with a single and Edwards followed with a double to right center. Two batters later Cabrera brought home Ferraro with a groundout.
Marshall also tallied three runs in the bottom of fourth on RBI-doubles by Owen Ayers and Cabrera along with an RBI-groundout by Kebler Peralta.
NOTES
Cabrera has five RBI in the first two contests this season, with multiple in each game.
Ferraro leads the Herd with five hits in eight ABs in the series to go with five runs scored.
Marshall is seeing the ball well at the plate as it has a .315 batting average in the first two games. Five MU student-athletes have three or more hits to start the season.
In 9.2 innings of relief, the Marshall bullpen has allowed just three runs.
