Â
HOOVER, Ala. – The Marshall University baseball team (3-0) used five-run sixth and ninth innings to complete a series sweep of the Saint Louis Billikens (0-3) with a 10-5 victory on Sunday in Hoover, Alabama.
Â
The Herd is off to its best start since winning its first three games to start the 1990 season.
Â
"Great start to the season! Today was not a clean game, but we found a way to win," Marshall baseball head coach Greg Beals said after clinching the sweep in his first series with the Herd. "Our men competed very well late in the game. The bullpen, (Peyton) Schofield and (Cole) Agemy did a great job keeping us in the game, and then (Ryan) Cap came in again to shut it down. We learned a lot about ourselves and need to keep growing. Looking forward to another good week of work in preparation for Charleston Southern."
Â
With MU trailing 4-0 and only having one hit, it went on an offensive explosion in the top of the sixth. Eddie Leon led off with a walk followed by a Daniel Carinci double to left. Cam Harthan then singled up the middle to clear the bases. A couple batters later, Luke Edwards scored on a wild pitch and an error to cut the deficit to one, 4-3.
Â
Owen Ayers stepped to the plate and scored Kyle Schaefer on a groundout to tie it up 4-4. With two outs and runners at the corners, Gio Ferraro smoked a double down the left-field line to bring home Gabriel Cabrera and give Marshall its first lead of the contest at 5-4.
Â
Like clockwork in the top of the ninth, Harthan and Edwards led off the inning with singles and Schaefer brought them home with a double for the eventual game-winning runs to give the Herd a 7-5 lead. Marshall added insurance runs when Schaefer scored on a wild pitch and RBI singles by Calin Smith and Carinci.
Â
Peyton Schofield came on from the bullpen and helped MU settle down. He threw a hitless bottom of the fourth and a perfect fifth frames.
Â
Then Cole Agemy came on and limited the damage by stranding runners at the corners in the sixth with a groundout to keep it tied 5-5. The righty followed it up in the seventh by striking out the side.
Â
Agemy made way for Ryan Capuano who worked around an error in the eighth and finished the contest with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to earn his first win of the season.
Â
NOTES
After going 4-for-5 on Sunday, Ferraro finished the opening series 9-for-13 at the plate with six runs scored.
Â
The Marshall bullpen was dominant in the first three games allowing just four runs, three earned, in 15.2 innings while striking out 22 batters. They gave up just eight hits and three walks.
Â
Cabrera and Harthan each drove in five runs this weekend.
Â
Edwards and Schaefer each scored four runs and had three RBI while Schaefer recorded six hits and Edwards five in the series.
