Seven-Unanswered Runs Power Herd Baseball to Game Two Win over CSU

2/25/2023 4:06:00 PM | Baseball

Bullpen throws 4.2 scoreless innings

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Behind a great bullpen effort and clutch hitting, the Marshall University baseball team (4-1) took game two, 7-4, over the Charleston Southern Buccaneers (2-4), on Saturday in Charleston, South Carolina.

"I am proud of the response and the competitive toughness we talk about," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said. "Bouncing back from yesterday and being down four today, we pitched the ball well today. (Raymond) Pacella got us into the middle of the game, (Drew) Harlow was really good in the middle and (Ryan) Cap made pitches when he needed to. We need to do a better job defensively supporting our pitching staff, but we executed a huge bunt defense getting the lead runner in the eighth. Offensively we kept competing, scoring in both the eighth and ninth after having two outs and nobody on base."

With two outs and the score tied 4-4 in the top of the eighth, Owen Ayers doubled to right and Gio Ferraro followed with a single up the middle to score Ayers and give the Herd its first lead of the game.

Amari Bartee singled up the middle with two outs in the ninth. Luke Edwards then smashed a 1-1 offering over the fence in left field to put MU up 7-4.

Drew Harlow, who threw 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball in relief, stranded a runner at third with a strikeout in the bottom of the sixth and ended the seventh with a strikeout. Harlow earned his second win of the season after striking out four.

In the bottom of the eighth, Ryan Capuano had runners at second and third with one out. However, he set down the next batters swinging to get out of the frame. The right-handed reliever followed that up with a scoreless ninth to earn his second save.

Marshall tied the game with four runs in the top of the sixth on RBI singles by Kyle Schaefer and Gabriel Cabrera with a sacrifice fly by Ferraro. Schaefer also scored on a wild pitch.

Starting pitcher Raymond Pacella went 4.1 innings of work as he struck out four Charleston Southern batters.

Bartee had the lone multi-hit game for the visitors as he went 2-for-2 off the bench. Edwards and Ferraro each had two RBI in the victory.
