Copen’s 11 strikeouts are a new career-high
Box Score
Â
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Patrick Copen strikes out a career-high 11 batters and Luke Edwards ties program doubles record as the Marshall University baseball team (8-7, 0-1 Sun Belt) fell in its Sun Belt Conference opener, 12-4, to the App State Mountaineers (9-7, 1-0 Sun Belt) Friday night in Charleston, West Virginia.
Â
"We have to execute pitches better. That's where it's at," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the loss. "The game got in a situation where they got offensive, they were relaxed and got a lead. It makes it tougher on our bullpen. We have to do more offensively in the middle of the game and make sure we're on the pitches we want to be on."
Â
Copen, MU's starting pitcher, punched out his 11 batters across 6.0 innings, giving up three runs on six hits and three walks. He recorded five straight strikeouts between the first and second innings, including four looking.
Â
Edwards registered the 48th double of his career to lead off the bottom of the third. The two bagger tied him with Victor Gomez for first in program history.
Â
Daniel Carinci had a RBI single in the fourth.
Â
Marshall tallied three runs in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Elijah Vogelsong, a Kyle Schaefer groundout and an Owen Ayers single.
Â
UP NEXT
The Herd continues its series at 3 p.m. on Saturday against App State at GoMart Ballpark in Charleston, West Virginia.
