Herd Baseball Opens Series at ULM with 13-6 Victory

Six multi-hit efforts
MONROE, La. – The Marshall University baseball team (12-11, 3-4 Sun Belt) began its series at ULM (9-18, 0-7 Sun Belt) with a 13-6 win on Friday evening.
"It is always good to get a win on Friday night," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said. "We played great defense and gave tough at-bats all night. (Patrick) Copen gave us another solid start and (Ryan) Capuano was tough picking up another save. We have the ability to be cleaner on the mound, and in situations - I want to get better at the little things. I am excited about the opportunity we have tomorrow to win a road series and get better as a ball club."
Luke Edwards, Kyle Schaefer, Gio Ferraro, Calin Smith, Chris Noble and Christian Lucio each recorded two hits in the victory. Edwards had a season-high three RBI in a game for the third time this season.
In the bottom of the eighth, closer Ryan Capuano came on from the bullpen with two outs, the bases loaded with Warhawks and a 10-6 lead. As the batter struck out on a dropped third strike, Capuano had to track the ball down the third baseline and threw it behind his back to Owen Ayers to record the final out of the inning at home. The fifth-year senior earned his fifth save of the season throwing 1.1 hitless innings allowing just a walk.
Starting pitcher Patrick Copen recorded his second win of the season going 6.0 innings while allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk as he struck out four.
Smith got the scoring started in the top of the first when he brought home Ayers with a double down the right-field line.
Edwards drove in his three runs on a two-RBI single in a three-run second inning and brought home Kebler Peralta on a groundout in the fourth.
One of Lucio's two hits was a solo homer in the top of the sixth, his first of the season.
With a sacrifice fly and a RBI single, Schaefer brought home a pair of runs. Noble had an RBI double in the fifth as Ferraro and Daniel Carinci each had run scoring base knocks in the ninth with Peralta adding a run on a groundout in the frame.

Marshall continues its series at Monroe on Saturday with a 3 p.m. EST/2 p.m. CST start against the Warhawks.
