Herd Baseball Takes 13-Inning Contest from EKU

Four players record three or more hits in the victory

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Marshall University baseball team (15-19) captured a road victory, 13-11, in 13 innings after overcoming an early five-run deficit against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels (15-21) on Tuesday evening.

"Great team win tonight. It took a lot and we kept fighting," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the win. "I am proud of the fight in this group after a tough weekend and a tough start tonight. We kept coming back."

Amari Bartee came up large in the 13th inning. With the bases loaded and down 0-1 in the count, Bartee collected his third hit of the contest with a single up the middle to plate Daniel Carinci and Owen Ayers for the game-winning runs. This all came after the right fielder turned a double play on a line drive to end the ninth.

Relief pitcher Drew Harlow pitched dominant 11th, 12th and 13th innings to earn his sixth win of the season. The junior righty struck out four, only allowing a hit and a walk in three-scoreless frames.

Luke Edwards recorded the third four-hit game of his career in the contest. The fifth-year senior fell a triple shy of the cycle as he recorded a pair of extra-base hits, including his fourth homer of the season in the fifth.

Reaching base six times in eight plate appearances, Owen Ayers collected three hits and drew three walks while scoring three runs and driving in two. Ayers hit his team-leading fifth home run to lead off the second and his 28 RBI leads the squad.

Gio Ferraro joined Ayers, Bartee and Edwards with at least a trio of hits in the contest. Two of Ferraro's three hits were doubles in the victory.

10 of the Herd's 11 position players to see action in the game had at least one hit.

Marshall has a quick turnaround as it plays host to the Colonels on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Kennedy Center.
