Herd Baseball Falls in Series Finale to Louisiana

Carinci, Schaefer multi-hit game
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University baseball team (13-16, 4-8 Sun Belt) dropped the series finale to the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns (23-9, 9-3 Sun Belt), 8-2, on Saturday in Charleston, West Virginia, at GoMart Ballpark.
"This is a good baseball team in Louisiana. They do all the little things right. They take advantage of their opportunities. They execute all the smaller things," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the series. "I'm not a fan of losing, but there are some lessons in that. Seeing how a team does all the little things and that's where we need to get better."
Daniel Carinci and Kyle Schaefer each went 2-for-3 in the contest.
MU scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the second. Gio Ferraro drew a leadoff walk. After Cam Harthan was hit by a pitch and a Daniel Carinci sacrifice bunt, Elijah Vogelsong plated Ferraro on a sacrifice fly.
Then in the third, Schaefer reached on a two-out infield single and scored on Owen Ayers' team-leading 12th double of the season.
Reliever Ryan Capuano finished the final 5.2 innings on the mound allowing just two runs, one earned, on three hits as he struck out five and didn't issue a walk.

Marshall hits the road as it travels to Athens, Ohio, to take on the Ohio Bobcats Tuesday at 6 p.m.
