Harthan extended hitting streak to seven games
Â
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (8-15, 2-4 Sun Belt) dropped a heartbreaker in 14 innings, 6-4, in the series finale on Sunday to the Arkansas State Red Wolves (14-12, 2-4 Sun Belt) at Jack Cook Field.
Â
"Tough loss today," Herd Baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the loss. "We asked a lot of Nick Weyrich. He pitched his tail off for a long time and ran out of gas there at the end. We had opportunities offensively to finish that ballgame. We were just one hit away a couple times. We just weren't able to get that key hit we had in the first two days of the series."
Â
The Herd had a big ninth to force extra innings. Tre Hondras led off with a single. Cam Harthan then singled on through the left side to extend his streak to seven games. AJ Havrilla followed with a single to right and an error allowed Hondras to score on the play making it 4-2.
Â
After a wild pitch, Jack Firestone brought home Harthan and moved Havrilla to third on a sacrifice fly. Kebler Peralta stepped to the plate and brought home Havrilla with a sacrifice fly to tie the ballgame 4-4.
Â
Relieve Nicholas Weyrich, who came into the contest in the seventh, competed to keep Marshall in the game across a 7.2 inning outing with nine strikeouts. After allowing an unearned run in the seventh, the junior right-hander put zeroes on the board from the top of the eighth through the 13th innings.
Â
The Red Wolves took advantage of a jam in the top of 14th tallying two runs as MU was able to comeback in the bottom half of the inning.
Â
Calin Smith crossed home on an Arkansas State error in the bottom of the third for the team's first run of the game.
Â
Starting pitcher Carter Lyles allowed two runs, both unearned, on five hits and two walks across 3.2 innings with three strikeouts.
Â
Griffin Miller hurled 1.2 innings of no-hit baseball out of the bullpen with Alex McKay allowing just an unearned run in 0.2 of an inning. Peyton Schofield struck out one in one-third of an inning.
