BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (8-16) dropped a narrow 4-2 ballgame to the No. 13 Virginia Tech Hokies (19-4) in Blacksburg, Virginia, on Tuesday afternoon.
The Herd out hit the Hokies 10-6 in the loss.
"Besides the walks in the bottom of the first inning, we played a great game of baseball today and arguably outplayed the 13th-ranked team in the country," Herd Baseball head coach Greg Beals said. "We need to feed off that as we head into a big conference series this weekend at App State."
Cam Harthan continued to swing a hot bat going 2-for-4 at the dish, extending his hitting streak to eight games with a single in the top of the second. AJ Havrilla also recorded a multi-hit game with a pair of singles.
The Marshall bullpen dominated the Virginia Tech order with Peyton Schofield, Lenny Washington, Alex McKay and Nick Jodway combing to throw the final 4.2 innings in scoreless fashion. The four relievers combined to give allow just three on base, two hits and a hit batter, while striking out six, including four by McKay.
The Herd was quick to get on the board. Owen Ayers registered his 10th double of the season with one out in the top of the first. After advancing to third on a wild pitch and Gio Ferraro reaching on an error, Ayers scored the first run on a passed ball to make it 1-0 MU.
VT answered with three runs in the bottom of the third and David McCann homered in the bottom of the fourth to give the home side a 4-1 lead.
Kebler Peralta brought home Harthan with a bases loaded ground out in the top of the ninth, but Marshall left two in scoring position as the game ended 4-2.
