BOONE, N.C. – The Marshall University Baseball team (9-16, 3-4 Sun Belt) opened its weekend series at App State (15-8, 3-4 Sun Belt) with a 9-8 win on Thursday night in Boone, North Carolina.

"Big road win for our guys," Herd Baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the win. "Also good for us to win a close game - Harlow deserved the W and Weyrich deserved the save. Those guys have pitched really well as of late in tough games. I was really happy with our offensive approach - we got several two-out RBI hits. Back at it tomorrow against a really solid opponent."

Caden Kaiser, Owen Ayers, Tre Hondras, Cam Harthan and Kebler Peralta each collected a pair of hits in the ballgame with both of Kaiser's hits being doubles. Harthan extended his hitting streak to nine games with a single in the seventh.

Kaiser also drove in a pair of runs with Elijah Vogelsong joining him with three on a homer.

On the mound, Drew Harlow started the contest and earned his fourth win of the season with six strikeouts across 5.2 innings. Nicholas Weyrich earned his third save of the season by recording the final six outs in the victory.

Kaiser, who hadn't played since March 12, opened the game with a leadoff double before scoring two batters later on an RBI groundout by Gio Ferraro to make it 1-0.

After the Mountaineers tied the game in the bottom of the second, Vogelsong launched his fifth homer of the season to score Ayers and Kaiser to make it 4-1 MU.

The Herd tallied three more runs in the top of the sixth as Hondras scored on a Calin Smith single with Kaiser doubling home Smith and Peralta to bring the advantage to 6-1.

Marshall added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh with Harthan driving home Ferraro. Harthan crossed home after a pair of steals and an App State error.

The Mountaineers added three runs across the seventh and eighth innings, but Marshall hung on for the win.

POSTGAME NOTES
Marshall was 6-for-14 with two outs in the ballgame, scoring five of its nine runs with two outs.

Harthan has multi-hit efforts in his last four contests with six such games during his nine-game hitting streak.
