BOONE, N.C. – The Marshall University Baseball team (9-17, 3-5 Sun Belt) fell in a roller coaster contest on Friday to the App State Mountaineers (16-8, 4-4 Sun Belt) in a 15-10 defeat on Friday in Boone, North Carolina.
Â
"I like the fight in our team - we got back in the lead late and I thought we had the momentum, but they put their own rally back on us," Herd Baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the ballgame. "We have a chance again tomorrow to win a road series and that will be huge for us."
Â
Owen Ayers went 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored as Jack Firestone also went 3-for-4 with three RBI in the contest.
Â
The Herd trailed until the top of the seventh. In the seventh, led off with a single up the middle followed by a Caden Kaiser double to put runners in scoring position with no outs. An Ayers sacrifice fly brought home Havrilla with Gio Ferraro bringing home Ayers with a single to cut the deficit to 9-5.
Â
Later in the inning, Firestone then stepped up to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded. Firestone sent the 1-0 offering through the right side to bring home Tre Hondras and Elijah Vogelsong to cut the deficit to two runs, 9-7. One batter later as MU batted through the order, Havrilla singled to left to plate Cam Harthan and Firestone tying the game 9-9.
Â
The Herd took a 10-9 lead in the top of the eighth on a Vogelsong sacrifice fly that scored Ayers.
Â
However, the Mountaineers tallied six runs in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead as The Herd was unable to answer in the ninth.
Â
Firestone tallied an RBI single in the second as Ferraro had an RBI single in the third and stole home for Marshall's three runs earlier in the contest.
Â
With a 0-for-4 day at the plate, Cam Harthan saw his nine-game hitting streak come to an end.
