HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Owen Ayers made program history on Thursday breaking his own single-season doubles record with his 24th double of 2024 in game one against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (31-21, 14-14 Sun Belt).
"When I hit it, I knew I hit it good, but I saw the right fielder was kind of close to it and I was thinking he might dive and catch it," Ayers said about his historic hit. "When I saw it go by, I knew that was it. It was a really cool moment to do it at home against Coastal again and have my whole family here."
Marshall (18-35, 9-19 Sun Belt) fell to CCU, 6-3, in the ballgame.
"We got hits to get things going, we didn't get many hits (to get guys in). We were 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position. We hit into four double plays," Herd Baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the game. "That wipes out some of those hits. The body of work shows offense, but the whole game with the runners in scoring position and those double plays hurt us on the offensive side. I liked the extra-base hits. I think we had five on the day. Great to see Owen Ayers break his own record and add on to it."
Ayers went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an infield single. The senior's 25 doubles this season are tied for the national lead after Friday's games. His 48 career doubles are tied with Victor Gomez (2008-11) for second most in program history.
Starting pitcher Drew Harlow dealt on the mound striking out a career-high 10 batters across 8.1 innings.
"Man how about Drew Harlow," Beals said about his starter's effort. "He just pitched his tail off. A couple of bad counts they took advantage of. Overall, Drew Harlow pitched his tail off. I love that young man. What a competitor he is. He gave us a chance to win a ball game."
Also at the plate, Caden Kaiser and Elijah Vogelsong each collected multi-hit contests with a pair of hits. Vogelsong's two hits were both for extra bases, including his fourth triple of the year that's tied for the conference lead.
The Herd's first run of the contest came in the second on an Ethan Murdoch groundout that plated Vogelsong. Kaiser then singled home Ayers with a base knock through the left side in the third.
Then in the sixth AJ Havrilla doubled home Kaiser.
Coastal tallied four of its sixth runs in the third with a run in each of the second and seventh innings.
