Murdoch opens season with three homers and seven RBI in four-game series
Â
HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Marshall University Baseball team (0-4) concluded its four-game series to open the 2025 Season at Hawaii (4-0) on Sunday in Honolulu.
Â
"A tough weekend on the field. We played a very good Hawaii ball club who played clean defensively and, on the mound," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "Offensively, they took advantage of their opportunities, and we helped them too much as well. Hawaii had 17 two-out RBI to our three. We need to find a way to win the big moments in a game. On the positive side, there were several things I liked. I think our offense is going to be strong - we hit a lot of balls hard. We simply need to be more consistent and get the big hit. Defensively, outside of the few errors we had, we made several very good plays and overall played solid defense. On the mound, we had a strong start from Griffin Miller and other strong outings. We need to throw more strikes and control the running game better."
Â
Ethan Murdoch led The Herd with a .462 batting average with six hits in 13 at bats with seven RBI and three homers. Newcomer Maika Niu also hit over the .400 mark with a .412 batting average with seven hits in 17 at bats including a pair of doubles and a triple.
Â
Game 1 – Hawaii 9, Marshall 8
With two outs in the second, Tyler Kamerer tallied the first run of the season on a homer in his MU debut. Murdoch followed for back-to-back long balls.
Â
Murdoch would homer again in the top of the sixth to score Kamerer.
Â
Junior Bryce Blevins started the contest on the hill going 5.0 innings allowing three runs on six hits and three walks with a pair of punchouts.
Â
Nicholas Weyrich came on from the bullpen with two outs in the sixth, hurling 2.1 hitless innings allowing just one walk and striking out three of the eight batters he faced.
Â
Game 2 – Hawaii 6, Marshall 2
Murdoch launched his third homer of the season to leadoff the top of the fifth.
Â
Marshall's other run came in the top of the third as Niu crossed home after a one-out triple on a Jackson Halter ground out.
Â
Out of the bullpen, Bauer Burkart and Charlie Krebs threw scoreless frames with Burkart registering a pair of strikeouts and Krebs throwing a perfect bottom of the sixth.
Â
Game 3 – Hawaii 7, Marshall 6
Sophomore Griffin Miller started on the mound for The Herd. The righty hurled 5.0 innings giving up three runs, only one earned, on six hits and three walks while setting down four Rainbow Warriors on strikeouts.
Â
At the dish, Jackson Golden, Eddie Leon, Murdoch and Niu all had multi-hit efforts with Niu having a three-hit day as he also scored two runs.
Â
Murdoch had his second multi-RBI game of the series with three in the contest with Cam Harthan, Golden and Niu also bringing home a run.
Â
Game 4 – Hawaii 10, Marshall 2
In the final game of the series, Niu registered both of his doubles scoring both of MU's runs. Halter also had a two-hit effort as AJ Havrilla tallied an RBI.
Â
On the bump, Clint Moak struck out five in 2.2 as he gave up four runs, none earned, on three hits and a walk.
Â
Luke Proehl made his debut in out of the bullpen in the sixth. He threw a perfect 1.1 innings with a strikeout. A.J. McAninch struck out the lone batter he faced in the bottom of the eighth in his first appearance in the Green and White.
