HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (4-6) sealed its home-opening series with a 12-3 victory over the FDU Knights (0-9) Saturday at Jack Cook Field.
"It wasn't a pretty ballgame," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said after the contest. "The conditions weren't the easiest to play in. They weren't the easiest to pitch in. We found a way to win. They helped us out, gave us several free bases and that was the difference in the baseball game. I really liked Charlie Krebs. He came in and settled that game in and got the win for us."
Tyler Kamerer drove home four RBI in the win. The team drew 15 walks as Elijah Vogelsong was issued four free passes and Cam Harthan drawing three and scoring three runs.
The Herd's bullpen combined to throw six scoreless innings. Charlie Krebs earned the victory with perfect fourth, fifth and sixth innings with a strikeout. Peyton Jackson struck out one in a perfect seventh as Bauer Burkart punched out a pair in a flawless eighth.
Blaine Albright threw the ninth. He allowed the bases to get juiced on a hit and two walks, but strikeout the next three FDU batters he faced to finish the game. Griffin Miller started the game striking out six in 3.0 innings of work.
Marshall trailed 3-0 after four innings, however, the home side got it going in the bottom of the fifth. Eddie Leon led off the inning with a double followed by walks to Harthan and Maika Niu to load the bases. A balk by Logan Madits saw the runners advance and Leon score MU's first run of the game.
Madits then issued a walk to Jackson Halter to then load the bases again, but he followed with a pair of strikeouts. A Madits wild pitch saw Harthan cross home and a free pass to Vogelsong loaded the bases for the third time of the inning. Kamerer forced a full count before being walked to see Niu score and tie the contest 3-3.
Ethan Murdoch followed with a fly ball to left that was dropped by the Knights left fielder Joey DiMotta to clear the bases and give The Herd a 6-3 advantage as it batted through the order.
Marshall added four more runs in the sixth with an AJ Havrilla double chasing home Harthan and a two-out triple by Kamerer scoring Havrilla, Nolan Wilson and Vogelsong to make it a 10-3 game.
In the seventh, MU added a pair of insurance runs on a Harthan double and a Jackson Golden RBI single.
