Herd winning streak moves to nine straight games
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (10-6) opened the week with an 11-5 victory over the Central Michigan Chippewas (2-14) on Tuesday night at Jack Cook Field.
The win moves The Herd's winning streak to nine games for the first time since a nine-game winning streak in 2016.
"I was really happy with how our guys pitched out of the bullpen," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said after the win. "We keep talking about how we shaped this pitching staff and created depth. Again, really evident today. Krebs, Albright, McKay and Burkart put up a bunch of zeros."
MU collected four homers in the contest. Elijah Vogelsong had a two-homer contest with one in the first and fifth innings as Ethan Murdoch hit his team-leading fifth long ball in the fifth and Maika Niu hit his first of the season in the eighth. Murdoch and Vogelsong each brought home a trio of RBI as Cam Harthan had a three-hit effort.
Out of the bullpen, Charlie Krebs, Blaine Albright, Alex McKay and Bauer Burkart combined to throw 7.2 scoreless innings allowing just three hits and three walks. Albright, Burkart and Krebs each struck out a pair of CMU hitters.
Marshall came out of the gates hot as a Harthan single and a Niu double put a pair in scoring position to start the game. A Jackson Halter ground out brought Harthan and moved Niu to third. After AJ Havrilla drew his first of three walks in the game, Murdoch made it 2-0 as Niu scored on a sacrifice fly.
Then like clockwork, Vogelsong hit his second two-out homer in as many games to bring home Havrilla and make it 4-0 Herd after one.
CMU answered with five runs in the second, but MU answered back in fourth and fifth. In the fourth, Eddie Leon, who saw his 11-game hitting streak come to an end, drew a bases loaded walk to score Murdoch and extend his on-base streak to 12 games after a Chippewa error. Harthan followed with a RBI base knock to chase home Tyler Kamerer to put The Herd back on top 6-5.
Havrilla then drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fifth. Murdoch then stepped to the dish and launched a ball over the left center wall with a full count for a homer. Vogelsong then combined for back-to-back homers on his fourth of the season after the CMU left fielder dropped a foul ball.
MU's final two runs cam from Niu. The shortstop scored Harthan on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth and followed with a solo dinger in the bottom of the eighth.
The Herd has four with a double-figure on-base safely streak with Leon and Vogelsong at 12 games each as Hartan and Murdoch have each reached base safely in the last 10.
