Niu goes 4-for-6 with three extra-base hits; win streak ends at nine games

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (10-7) saw its winning streak end at nine games in a 12-11 loss to the Central Michigan Chippewas (3-14) on Wednesday night at Jcck Cook Field. The Herd ended its nine-game homestand with an 8-1 record.

"It was a heck of a homestand we had. Unfortunately, it was a little too little too late there, but we had some opportunities earlier in the game to make some plays and help ourselves out a little bit and we just missed," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said.

Maika Niu finished the contest 4-for-6 with three runs scored and three extra-base hits in the contest, two triples and a double. Eddie Leon and Cam Harthan also had multi-hit efforts as Leon scored a pair of runs and Harthan had a pair of RBI.

Jackson Halter hit his first home run of the season on a two-out, two-RBI blast to right in the ninth.

Out of the bullpen, Tim Baird hurled a scoreless seventh with a pair of strikeouts as A.J. McAninch threw a perfect ninth. Luke Proehl and Peyton Jackson also strikeout a pair of batters.

Niu nearly tied the game in the bottom of the ninth, but the CMU defense was positioned in a shift as his liner up the middle was snagged by the second baseman.

UP NEXT
Marshall is set to open Sun Belt Conference with a three-game series at Arkansas State beginning on Friday.
