JONESBORO, Ark. – The Marshall University Baseball team (11-8, 1-1 SBC) evened its series at Arkansas State (8-10, 1-1 SBC) with a 12-2, seven-inning win on Saturday night in Jonesboro, Arkansas. MU tallied 11 runs, six in the fourth, across the final four innings.
"Great bounce back victory for The Herd," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said after win. "We had great competitive energy and showed toughness on the heels of last night. We got an outstanding pitching performance from Griffin Miller and got offensive contribution up and down the line-up. Big opportunity tomorrow to win a road series."
On the mound, Griffin Miller earned his third win of the season with a 7.0 inning complete game. The sophomore allowed just two runs on seven hits and a hit batter with a pair of strikeouts and no walks.
Maika Niu had a day at the plate with a 3-for-5 effort with two doubles and a homer with three RBI and two runs scored. Tonight marked the junior's third multi-hit effort of the week and all three with two or more extra-base hits.
Eddie Leon also had a three-hit, three-RBI effort in the victory. Joining Leon and Niu with a multi-hit and multi-RBI game was Cooper Hinson with two hits, including a double, with a pair of RBI.
The first run of the ballgame came in the first after a Niu leadoff double led to a one-out RBI single for Jackson Halter.
The Herd offense broke out in the fourth inning for six runs. AJ Havrilla brought home Halter with a single. Leon followed with a two-RBI single scoring Havrilla and Ethan Murdoch. Niu closed out the frame with a three-run, two-out dinger to score Hinson and Nolan Wilson.
Marshall then used a two-out rally in the fifth for three runs as after Murdoch and Elijah Vogelsong hit back-to-back singles, Leon brought home Murdoch with a base knock. Then Wilson cleared the bags with a two-out double to make it 10-1.
Hinson brought home the final two of MU's runs in the seventh bringing home Leon and Vogelsong with a double.
