Herd Baseball Completes Sweep of Bradley

Marshall moves winning streak to eight games

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (9-6) completed a sweep of the Bradley Braves (2-10) and extended its winning streak to eight games with a 7-2 victory on Sunday at Jack Cook Field.

"Obviously, getting a win today and a sweep was big, but inside the game, it was how we controlled the game," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said after his side completed a sweep over the Braves on Sunday. "One free base on the mound, no errors, forcing our opponent to earn everything they get, and we have a chance to be really tough when we do that."

The Herd's pitching staff controlled the game allowing just one free base with the defense not making an error. Starter Fenix DiGiacomo registered his first win of the season with a quality start hurling 6.0 innings while allowing just two runs on six hits and a walk with a pair of strikeouts.

In relief, Clint Moak, Alex McKay and Nicholas Weyrich combined for three scoreless frames on just two hits. McKay struck out a pair with Weyrich registering one punchout.

At the plate, Tyler Kamerer had his fourth two-hit effort of the season with a pair of doubles as Eddie Leon had two hits with his fourth homer of the year and a double as he extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

Elijah Vogelsong had a game-changing two-out, three-run homer in the third, his second of the season, to put the Green and White on top for the rest of the game. As a team, MU put up a .314 two-out batting average in the series with 11 hits in 35 at bats.

After the Braves took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Cam Harthan led off the bottom of the inning with a single and made it to third on a groundout and a wild pitch. Jackson Halter then brought Harthan home on a groundout to first to tie the contest, 1-1.

Bradley tallied a run in the top of the second as a pair of groundouts put AJ Havrilla at the dish with two outs and no one on in the bottom of the third for The Herd. He sent a 2-0 pitch to right center for a double. Ethan Murdoch then drew a free pass with a full count to put runners at first and second with two outs.

With a 1-0 count, Vogelsong launched the second pitch of his at bat to right for a three-run two-out dinger to give MU a 4-2 lead, its first of the contest.

Then in the bottom of the sixth, Leon sent a 2-0 offering over the fence in left center to add a run, 5-2, for The Herd, now tied with Murdoch for the team lead at four.

Halter led off the bottom of the with a double to deep center. After Will Lafferty came on to pinch run, Murdoch launched a one-out 2-1 pitch to right center to score Lafferty as a throwing error by the Bradley shortstop went into the dugout to allow the right fielder to also cross home and make it 7-2 on the final runs of the game.

Marshall closes out a nine-game homestand with a pair of midweek games against Central Michigan on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday's first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
