Halter, Vogelsong each homer
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (18-18, 6-9 SBC) fell in extra innings, 8-5, to the App State Mountaineers (19-16, 9-6 SBC) Sunday afternoon at Jack Cook Field.
"It's a tough loss," Head Coach Greg Beals said after the game. "It was interesting ballgame with how things developed. We came out and got runs early, including a big homerun by Elijah Vogelsong, and gave us a lead. Then we went to the bullpen and did some good things, but then Baird's third time out he walked two guys and those two guys up scoring and tying the game with two runs a sacrifice fly to right center field. We didn't execute the double cut to try and get him at the plate. Then a chopper and a ball stuck in the sun. No excuses, but just fluke things that happened to fuel a lot of their offense."
Starting pitcher Clint Moak allowed just one run on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 4.1. Reliever Tim Baird threw 2.0 innings allowing two runs on hits and three walks with five punchouts.
At the dish, Elijah Vogelsong went 2-for-4 with three RBI and his fifth homer with Jackson Halter notching his second dinger of the season.
The Herd got on the board early as a Nolan Wilson groundout scored Ethan Murdoch in the bottom of the second. Then in the bottom of the fourth, Maika Niu led off with a double. Vogelsong then launched a two-out homer to right center to tally Niu and make it 3-0.
The Mountaineers tied the game with a run in the fifth and a pair in the seventh before taking the lead with one in the top of the ninth.
However, MU struck in the bottom half of the inning as it took advantage of an App State throwing error followed by a Vogelsong RBI single to score Murdoch to tie the ballgame 4-4 and force extra innings.
The Mountaineers grabbed four runs in the top of the 10th to take an 8-4 advantage. Halter hit a leadoff homer in the bottom of the frame, but The Herd was unable to mount a comeback.
