Herd Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Saturday Over South Alabama

Marshall earns series win over the Jaguars in first two games

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (22-22, 8-12 SBC) took a doubleheader and earned a series win through the first two games of its series against the South Alabama Jaguars (17-23, 7-13 SBC) on Saturday at Jack Cook Field.
"It was a really good day of baseball for us," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "We pitched well enough, and we got hits when we needed them. We played great defense. We played 18 innings with no errors. If we can pitch and play defense behind them, we're going to be tough."
Game 1 Marshall 10, South Alabama 2
Bryce Blevins dealt in game one with a quality start by going 8.0 innings, giving up just two runs on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts to earn his fourth win of the year.
The Jaguars struck first with a pair of runs in the first. However, after Tyler Kamerer and Elijah Vogelsong drew walks to start the bottom of the second, Ethan Murdoch launched his ninth homer and garnered his 32nd RBI to put MU up 3-2.
Marshall added a pair of runs in the fourth as Murdoch scored on a Maika Niu single and an AJ Havrilla sacrifice fly brought home Nolan Wilson to make 5-2.
Then in fifth Vogelsong and Murdoch crossed home on wild pitches as Jackson Halter chased Cam Harthan across the plate on a groundout to make 8-2.
The Herd capped off 10 unanswered runs with Eddie Leon scoring on a Vogelsong sacrifice fly in the sixth and Wilson scoring on a single by Niu in the seventh.
Reliever Peyton Jackson hurled a perfect ninth inning with a punch out to finish game one with a win for MU.
Game 2 Marshall 4, South Alabama 2
Griffin Miller started game two on the bump for The Herd. The sophomore struck out five in 5.1 allowing two runs on five hits and three walks in his outing en route to moving his record to 5-2.
On in relief, Charlie Krebs gave up just two walks and a hit across 2.1 scoreless frames with a strikeout. Nicholas Weyrich registered his fourth save of the season with 1.1 perfect innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Marshall jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first. Leon brought home Halter for the first run of the game as Niu scored after the Jags committed an error and Kamerer reached on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt.
MU concluded the frame with a Vogelsong single that scored Leon to make it 3-0.
South Alabama rallied with a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings. Krebs came on from the bullpen with one out and runners at the corners in the sixth. The right-hander got his first batter out, but found himself in a jam as a stolen base and a walk later saw the visitors have the bases loaded with two outs.
However, the sophomore forced a ground out to leave three on base and end the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Vogelsong added an insurance run with a one-out homer, his sixth of the year, as The Herd cruised the rest of the way to the 4-2 win.

Marshall looks to complete a three-game sweep of South Alabama in game three at 11 a.m. on Sunday at Jack Cook Field.
