Herd Takes Game One Over No. 13 Southern Miss Behind Blevins Complete Game

Kamerer bases clearing triple in the sixth proves to be difference

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (15-15, 4-6 SBC) captured its series opener, 4-3, on Friday over No. 13 Southern Miss (21-9, 7-3 SBC) at Jack Cook Field.
"It's not necessarily taking down a good Southern Miss baseball team, it's more about how our guys played tonight and the competitiveness and toughness they showed against a really good team and a really good pitcher," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said after the win. "Bryce Blevins pitched his tail off. His pitch count went up a little higher than I ideally would have liked, but there was now way you could change the tempo of the game. He had control of the game, so we rode him to the finish line."
Improving to 3-3, Bryce Blevins hurled a complete game allowing three runs, just two earned, on five hits and a walk with six strikeouts on 122 pitches. The junior lefty now has three career complete games.
Tyler Kamerer registered his third three-RBI game of the season with three in the contest with a triple as Cam Harthan picked up his sixth multi-hit effort of the year with a single and a double.
Blevins and USM starter JB Middleton were in a pitchers' duel through the first five innings. Blevins nearly faced the minimum through five seeing 16 Golden Eagle hitters and allowing just a pair of hits. Middleton stranded four runners in scoring position through the first five frames.
The offense broke loose for both sides in the sixth. Southern Miss used a pair of singles, a walk, an error and a sacrifice fly to tally the first three runs of the ballgame.
However, Middleton started to derail in the bottom of the inning. AJ Havrilla and Maika Niu both battled to full count walks to start the frame. After an Ethan Murdoch strikeout, Middleton plunked Elijah Vogelsong to load the bases as pulled from the game.
Colby Allen came on from the bullpen to face Kamerer. The Herd second baseman got into a favorable 3-1 count. Kamerer then smoked the fifth pitch into right center. The redshirt sophomore cleared the bags with a triple and scored as Nick Monistere fumbled the throw from Carson Paetow to give MU a 4-3 lead.
Blevins closed the game strong facing just 10 batters across the final three innings to earn the series opening win for The Herd.
