ATLANTA – The Marshall University Baseball team (27-24, 12-14 SBC) sealed its series at Georgia State Panthers (24-28, 9-17 SBC) with a 13-3 win in seven innings on Saturday in game two in Atlanta.
"Big win for us to clinch the series," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said after the win. "Griffin Miller was not at his best, but he made big pitches when he needed to. Really happy how Fenix DiGiacomo pitched - he was hot in the bullpen for several innings before he got in the game, but he maintained his focus and pitched really well. Great day offensively from Jackson Halter and Nolan Wilson - it is good to see Nolan getting hot at the right time. Big home run from Maika Niu that busted the game open. We need to keep this momentum and keep climbing the standings one game at a time."
Jackson Halter picked up his 16th multi-hit game of the season going 3-for-5 at the dish while bringing home a career-high five RBI. Nolan Wilson went 3-for-4 for his seventh multi-hit game of the season with three runs scored as Maika Niu drove home a career-high four RBI.
On the mound, Griffin Miller earned his sixth win of the season striking out seven in 5.0 innings while allowing three runs, only two earned. Fenix DiGiacomo finished the final 2.0 innings giving up no hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
The Panthers got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first, but a Halter single chased Wilson and Cam Harthan across the plate to make it 2-1 in the top of the second.
GSU tied the contest 2-2 in the bottom of the second, but Elijah Vogelsong's seventh homer of the season in the top of the third followed by a two-out two-RBI double by Halter that scored Halter and Wilson saw MU go back up 5-2.
In the bottom of the third, Georgia State picked up a run. However, The Herd would score eight unanswered runs the rest of the way.
Halter brought home Wilson with a two-out single in the top of the fifth to make it 6-3. Niu then brought home Tyler Kamerer and Halter with a two-out, three-run homer on a 2-2 pitch to extend the lead to 9-3. It marked Niu's ninth longball of the season and his fifth in his last five games.
Then in the sixth, Wilson chased home Vogelsong and Ethan Murdoch with a base knock. Later in the frame, Niu and AJ Havrilla each brought home Harthan and Kamerer, respectively, with bases loaded walks to reach the final score of 13-3.
