Extra innings win seals road sweep of the Panthers for The Herd
ATLANTA – The Marshall University Baseball team (28-24, 13-14 SBC) captured an 11-10 win in 10 innings on Sunday to finish a road sweep of the Georgia State Panthers (24-29, 9-18 SBC) in Atlanta.
"Great to see our guys compete and come back and keep going," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said, "Big time relay from Tyler Kamerer to save the game, big game from TK all around and an absolutely huge home run from Eli Vogelsong. We executed our situations to a 'T' late in the game. Gritty performances out of the bullpen from Baird, Krebs, Albright and Weyrich."
Maika Niu continued to swing a hot bat picking up his 18th multi-hit game of the season with a double and his sixth homer in his last six games to go with three RBI.
Nolan Wilson finished the weekend with seven RBI in the series, including three in the finale, with Elijah Vogelsong driving home a trio of runs. Tyler Kamerer registered his fourth three-hit contest of the season, including his second homer of 2025.
On the bump, Tim Baird recorded five strikeouts in 3.0 innings of relief as Charlie Krebs threw 1.2 frames of hitless baseball with three strikeouts. Nicholas Weyrich earned his fifth win, second of the weekend, going 2.0 innings and allowing just an unearned run.
MU took a 4-1 lead after the top of the third as a Jackson Halter RBI single scored Wilson and Niu followed with a three-run blast to score Kamerer and Halter. The homer was Niu's 10th of the season to tie Ethan Murdoch for the team lead.
The Panthers tallied three runs in the bottom of the third and five in the fifth to grab a 9-4 advantage on Marshall.
However, The Herd would battle back. Kamerer's solo home run in the top of the fifth cut the deficit to 9-5. The visitors then saw Niu score on a Murdoch two-out single. Vogelsong followed with his eighth longball of the season to score Murdoch and AJ Havrilla to knot the game 9-9.
Kamerer then gave MU its first lead since the third at 10-9 with a RBI single to right to score Cam Harthan in the top of the ninth, but GSU tied the game with a run in the bottom half of the inning to force extra innings.
In the top of the 10th, Wilson brought home Eddie Leon with a sacrifice bunt for the eventual game-winning run.
