Victory earns Marshall a spot in 2025 Sun Belt Conference Tournament
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (29-24, 14-14 SBC) captured a 10-8 win over the Georgia Southern Eagles (27-27, 13-15 SBC) Thursday night to open a three-game series at Jack Cook Field.
The win sealed The Herd a spot in the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Tournament next week in Montgomery, Alabama.
"We've really grown in our approach offensively, of late, just not Maika the whole ballclub. We had 15 hits and only struck out three times tonight," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said about his team's effort at the plate. "One of our core values is competitive toughness. From a coaching standpoint, that's fun to watch our guys and our program grow."
Tied 8-8 in bottom of the eighth after six unanswered runs by Georgia Southern, Maika Niu stepped to the plate with one out and Tyler Kamerer at second. Niu's count sat at 1-2 after taking a strike, fouling off a pair of pitches and taking a ball. The shortstop then sent the fifth pitch of his at bat over the left-field fence for his team-leading 11th homer of the season to put Marshall up 10-8. Niu has homered in his last five games, with seven in his last seven contests.
Nicholas Weyrich then came on in the top of the ninth. The senior closer worked around a one-out single to retire the side and seal the win for MU and collect his fifth save of the year.
At the dish, Eddie Leon recorded a career-high four hits to go with a pair of RBI in the win. Kamerer scored three runs as Jackson Halter registered three RBI on a pair of doubles.
In the bottom of the first, Ethan Murdoch scored Niu on a single up the middle as Elijah Vogelsong infield single scored Leon to tie the game 2-2 after GS scored a pair in the top of the first.
Then in the second, a Halter double scored Kamerer, AJ Havrilla brought home Halter with a double and Leon scored Havrilla with a two-out double.
Halter followed with another double in the third to score Kamerer and Vogelsong as a Leon base knock in the fourth scored Havrilla.
Charlie Krebs earned his fifth win of the season throwing 2.0 allowing three runs, just one earned on four hits and no walks with a strikeout.
