Niu ties SBC record with homer in six straight; Marshall earns win 30
Â
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (30-24, 15-14 SBC) used a 10-4 win over the Georgia Southern Eagles (27-28, 13-15 SBC) Friday night at Jack Cook Field to clinch the series and earn the team's 30th win..
Â
A three-run homer in the bottom of the second by Maika Niu was his sixth in six straight games tying a Sun Belt Conference record by Jacksonville's Jeff DePiano in 1983.
Â
"Win 30, that's huge for our program and to win the last home series here at Jack Cook Field.," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said after the win. "Herd Nation showed up and that's a shot in the arm for our ballclub. I like how we played. We only gave up five hits, struck them out 14 times tonight, put up no errors and scored 10 runs again."
Â
The Herd saw its five through nine hitters in Ethan Murdoch, Elijah Vogelsong, Nolan Wilson, Cam Harthan and Tyler Kamerer all registering multi-hit games with Harthan recording a three-hit evening.
Â
Griffin Miller earned his seventh win of the season allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits and a walk with six strikeouts. Tim Baird came on in relief striking out eight of his 11 batters faced in the final three frames for his first save of the season.
Â
MU jumped out on the Eagles early with a six-run second, all with two outs. Harthan tallied the first run with a infield single that scored Murdoch as Kamerer brought home Vogelsong with a single through the left side. Harthan then scored on a wild pitch before Niu's record tying blast brought home Jackson Halter and Kamerer to cap off the inning.
Â
GS scored all four of its runs in the top of the fourth. However, Marshall answered one inning later.
Â
A sacrifice bunt by Eddie Leon to score Niu to make it a 7-4 game. Nolan Wilson then chased home Murdoch and AJ Havrilla with a base knock to make it 9-4.
Â
Kamerer ended the inning with a two-out single through the right side to plate Vogelsong for the final run of the contest.
