Marshall Sweeps Georgia Southern, Earns Fourth Seed at 2025 SBC Tournament

Herd to face Louisiana Wednesday night in Montgomery, Alabama
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (31-24, 16-14 SBC) sealed a sweep over the Georgia Southern Eagles (27-29, 13-17 SBC) with a 9-8 10 inning win on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Jack Cook Field. Maika clinched the sweep with a walk-off single.
With the win, The Herd earned the fourth seed in the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Tournament and will face fifth-seeded Louisiana at 8:30 p.m. EST/7:30 p.m. CST to start the double-elimination portion of the tournament in Montgomery, Alabama.
Prior to the game, The Herd honored Tim Baird, Fenix DiGiacomo, Nolan Wilson, Alex McKay, Nicholas Weyrich, Eddie Leon and Elijah Vogelsong in a pregame ceremony.
"It was a good win against an established program in Georgia Southern," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said about the sweep. "There's never a feeling of disbelief, and that's the guys. It's one thing for coach to have philosophies and core values. We try to create a culture, the guys live the culture and it's fun for me to see that happen."
Leon notched his sixth game of three or more hits with a 3-for-4 game with a double and two RBI.
Weyrich notched his sixth win of the season with two scoreless innings, allowing just a hit and a walk with two strikeouts. DiGiacomo hurled 1.2 innings in relief, allowing a run on two hits and a walk with a punchout. Charlie Krebs followed with 1.1 innings on the mound, allowing no runs on two hits.
Tied in the bottom of the 10th, Wilson started the inning with a single up the middle. Will Lafferty pinch ran before being moved over on a Cam Harthan sacrifice bunt. After a walk to Tyler Kamerer, Lafferty and Kamerer executed a double steal to put a pair in scoring position with one out.
Jackson Halter then drew a four-pitch walk to bring Niu to the dish. The shortstop, who came in to the at bat hitless in the game, smoked a 1-0 pitch through the left side to score Lafferty for the win and finish MU's sweep of the Eagles.
Marshall started the game with three runs in the bottom of the first starting with Niu scoring on a Leon RBI single. AJ Havrilla then scored on a wild pitch before Leon crossed home a single by Ethan Murdoch.
The Herd added three more runs the next inning with Halter scoring Wilson on a single, Harthan scoring on an error and Kamerer scoring on a double play to make it 6-0.

The Herd looks to 2025 SBC Championship presented by Troy University in Montgomery, Alabama, starting Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. EST/7:30 p.m. CST against fifth-seeded Louisiana.
