Marshall Baseball Drops First Game At The Citadel On Friday

Late rally falls just short; Herd, Bulldogs meet again at 11 a.m. on Saturday
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Marshall Baseball dropped its weekend opener in South Carolina, falling 4-3 to The Citadel on Friday at Joe P. Riley, Jr., Park in Charleston, S.C.
With the loss, the Herd drops to 2-2 on the season.Â
"Tough game today, but I really like the compete in our guys!" Marshall head coach Greg Beals said. "Their starting pitcher was on tonight and he held us down. At the end of the day, we had our chances. That is two losses by one run in this early season. We need to find a way to thrive in big situations."
The Herd tried to mount a late rally, loading the bases with no outs in the top of the ninth, but a strikeout and an RBI fielder's choice by Jackson Halter preceded a flyout that ended the game one run short.Â
Marshall trailed 4-0 in the 8th inning, but Ethan Murdoch launched a two-run home run that scored Tyler Kamerer to cut the deficit in half and get the Herd on the scoreboard.
Bryce Blevins started the game and took the loss, allowing four runs – three earned – on eight hits in six innings of work. He walked two and struck out eight in a solid performance.Â
Marshall manufactured the bases loaded in the top of the seventh with an error, a hit batsmen and an infield single, but a strikeout ended the Herd's threat.
Evan Bottone finished 3-for-5 while Mason Onate added two hits for the Herd in the loss.Â
The game was scheduled for a 4 p.m. start, but rain showers earlier in the day forced field preparation that delayed the first pitch for 45 minutes.
Marshall and The Citadel are scheduled to return to action at Joe P. Riley, Jr., Park for a Saturday contest to complete their two-game series. That game has been moved to 11 a.m. due to weather concerns.
