HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (3-5) picked up a 4-3 win over Butler in the team's 2026 home opener at Jack Cook Field on Friday.
Obviously, it's great to be back home. Being in front of our home crowd is a great environment at our ballpark. I appreciate Herd Nation coming out to watch us play and it's exactly what we needed, Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said after the home opening win.
Butler struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the opening frame on an unearned run. Marshall threatened in the early innings, but it was not until the fourth that the Herd broke through.
Outfielder Ethan Murdoch scored from second on a clutch double by catcher Jackson Golden, evening the score at 1-1.
The momentum carried into the fifth, where a leadoff single by Tyler Kamerer set the table. Outfielder Cooper Hinson delivered a go-ahead RBI double, and the Herd capitalized on a wild pitch and a groundout from Golden to build a 4-1 advantage.
On the mound, senior left-hander Bryce Blevins set the tone. Blevins fanned six batters and issued no walks over seven innings, limiting Butler to one earned run and scattering seven hits. He improved to 2-1 on the season.
Butler fought back, plating single runs in the sixth and eighth to cut the margin to 4-3. The Herd bullpen held firm, with graduate right-hander Tim Baird working the final two frames to secure his first save of the season.
Jackson Golden finished 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in two and ripping a pair of doubles to pace the offense. Tyler Kamerer also collected three hits and scored once, while Hinson reached base three times with a double, walk and hit by pitch.
