Havrilla homers twice with four RBI
Â
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Marshall University Baseball team (13-9, 5-1 SBC) suffered its first Sun Belt Conference loss in 2026, 18-12, in its series finale at Georgia Southern on Sunday afternoon.
Â
"Today wasn't our day. We have to pitch the ball better than we did today in order to win - 15 free passes is way too many to win good baseball games," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "All of their ground balls found holes today and when you combine that with free runners, it is a prescription for giving up runs. Offensively, I see our approach continue to grow which is encouraging. We will ride this bus home and get ready for WVU on Tuesday at The Jack."
Â
AJ Havrilla had a 3-for-5 day at the plate with his second and third homers of the season and four RBI. Jackson Golden hit his first homer in 2026 and drove in three RBI.
Â
The Herd got on the board first with a Golden two-RBI single in the second and a solo homer from Havrilla in the third to go up 3-0.
Â
In the sixth, Marshall tallied seven runs on RBI singles from Cleary Simpson, Tyler Kamerer and Evan Bottone, a Golden sacrifice bunt with an error and a Havrilla three-run homer. The seven-run frame put MU back on top 10-6 after GS tallied six runs from the third to fifth innings.
Â
The Eagles regained the lead with six runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and four insurance runs in the eighth.
Â
The Herd had Cooper Hinson drive in a run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth and Golden hit a solo homer in the ninth, but the visitors couldn't rally back from the deficit. Â
Â
UP NEXT
The Herd returns to Jack Cook Field for a five-game homestand starting with in-state rival No. 20 West Virginia on Tuesday night.
