HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (19-21, 10-9 SBC) used a second straight complete game from Bryce Blevins to power past Troy, (20-22, 10-9 SBC) 7-4, in the series opener at Jack Cook Field on Friday night.
Â
The win for Blevins was the 20th of his career, tying Chase Boster (2013-16) for the career program record.
Â
"It's a great Friday night. That's a Herd brand of baseball what we did tonight, and it starts on the mound with Bryce Blevins," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "Just again pounding the bottom of the strike zone. Fastball, curveball, changeup, all of them in the mix, and just pitched really good. We played clean defense. We made some plays on defense, committed no errors. That's a brand of baseball we want to be playing, and we had some tough at-bats. We only struck out three times tonight."
Â
The senior lefty struck out seven in his complete-game performance allowing four runs on nine hits and a walk. Blevins has thrown at least 8.0 innings with seven strikeouts in his last seven starts.
Â
At the plate, Evan Bottone went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI, marking his 10th game of the season with three hits. Cleary Simpson also produced a multi-hit, multi-RBI game with two of each and a pair of walks with Tyler Kamerer also collecting a pair of hits.
Â
The Herd got the scoring started in the bottom of the second. Three walks and a fielder's choice saw Oliver Service, Simpson, and Jackson Golden load the bases with one out. After a popout, Bottone doubled to right as Service and Simpson scored to make it 2-0.
Â
Then in the third, Kamerer led off with his 16th double of the season and advanced to third on a ground out. AJ Havrilla followed with a sacrifice fly to plate the second baseman and make it 3-0.
Â
The Trojans answered with back-to-back homers from Jimmy Janicki and Steven Meier to pull the score to 3-2 in the top of the fourth.
Â
However, a leadoff walk to Simpson followed by a RBI triple from Golden doubled MU's advantage to 4-2 through four.
Â
Two more runs crossed for Marshall in the bottom of the fifth as Havrilla and Jackson Halter crossed home on a Simpson single to make it 6-2.
Â
The Herd concluded five straight innings with a run as Bottone scored on a Troy error to extend the lead to five, 7-2, after six innings.
Â
Blake Cavill hit a homer in the eighth and Troy tallied a two-out run in the ninth, but couldn't overcome the deficit.
