HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (19-23, 10-11 SBC) dropped the series finale to the Troy Trojans (22-22, 12-9 SBC) in a 1-0 pitching duel on Sunday at Jack Cook Field.
Â
"It's disappointing to lose, but we played a good baseball game. It's a 1-0 college baseball game with a lot of good baseball being played," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "Both teams pitched the ball well and played good defense. We just had a wild pitch and a passed ball back-to-back that created a run for them."
Â
Starting pitcher Kenyon Collins went 7.0 innings while striking out six and allowing one run on five hits and a walk. Out of the bullpen, Landon Doll hurled a scoreless eighth with Charlie Krebs throwing a perfect ninth.
Â
Troy starting pitcher Hayden Smith threw 6.0 scoreless innings on the bump with three strikeouts while allowing three hits. Cooper Ellingsworth earned the save going 3.0 innings on the mound and giving up a pair of hits.
Â
At the plate Cleary Simpson registered his second multi-hit game of the weekend with a 2-for-2 performance while also reaching on a hit-by-pitch.
Â
The two pitching staffs combined to give up just three free bases on two hit batters and a walk. There were no extra-base hits given up by either with all 12 hits in the contest being singles.
Â
The difference in the game came in the top of the third. Aaron Piasecki reached on a one-out single before being sacrificed over to second. A wild pitch and passed ball saw Piasecki cross home for the lone run in the contest for the Trojans.

The Herd returns to the field at Morehead State on Tuesday to start a stretch of six games away from Jack Cook Field.
