MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Marshall University Baseball team (19-24) fell 9-6 to Morehead State (23-21) on Tuesday night in Morehead, Kentucky.
Â
"Early in the game we helped them. We had free bases. I think five of their runs scored went on base freely and in a ballgame in a park like this you can't give freebies," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said.            Â
Â
Evan Bottone finished the contest 3-for-5 with a triple and a pair of RBI while registering his 11th three-hit game of the season. Mason Onate hit the second homer of his Marshall career in the ninth.
Â
Out of the bullpen, A.J. McAninch threw 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball with Davis Gunn setting down the final two batters Marshall faced.
Â
After scoreless first and second innings, MU loaded the bases to start the third with walks to Cam Harthan, Jackson Golden and Mason Onate. Then on a 1-1 offering, Bottone singled through the left side to plate Harthan and Golden to make it 2-0.
Â
The Eagles answered with seven runs, including three-run homers from Ian McCubbin and Brayton Coomer, to see the Herd at a 7-2 disadvantage.
Â
Marshall struck back with a pair of two-out RBI singles from Golden and Onate cut the deficit to 7-4.
Â
MSU struck back for another two runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend its lead back to five at 9-4.
Â
MU saw Bottone score on a Hinson groundout in the top of the seventh with Onate homering in the ninth, but couldn't overcome the deficit.
