HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Herd baseball (9-5) got the bats going on Sunday as Marshall completed the four-game sweep of the Eastern Michigan Eagles by taking game three 25-3 and game four 10-3 of a doubleheader on Sunday at Kennedy Center in Huntington.

"They (the bats) came out," 13th-year head coach Jeff Waggoner said after the big day at the plate for the Herd's offense. "It was a good weekend to start building confidence, before our first conference weekend starts."

The Marshall offense exploded for 25 runs on 28 hits in game one on Sunday, before scoring 10 runs on 17 hits in the final game of the series.

"As a team, we've tried to just get back to the basics," Herd outfielder/first baseman Shane Hanon said. "We're trying to keep our swings short and put the barrel on the ball instead of lifting our heads and limit our strikeouts."

Shane Hanon had quite the day in the Sunday twin bill. Hanon went a combined eight-for-11 in the two games with six RBI and two home runs. In game one, the senior went six-for-six at the plate, with one base-on-balls as he hit for the cycle.

"I was just seeing the ball well," Hanon said about his big day at the plate. "I woke up and had a good day."

"It was amazing," Waggoner said. "Shane has always been a good hitter here. He was battling some injuries over winter, including a surgery. Now he's got his strength back and he's finding his swing. It's fun to watch."

Hanon wasn't the only Marshall player to have a big day at the plate, as four others joined him with five or more hits on the day.

Elvis Peralta, like Hanon, drove in six runs between the two games. The shortstop drove in those runs on seven hits, three of which were for extra bases, including a home run.

Reynaldo Pastrana collected five hits in his eight at-bats on Sunday. The senior catcher had three doubles and hit his first dinger of the season.

Zach Inskeep also went five-for-eight in the doubleheader with a pair of two-baggers. Inskeep areached base after being hit by a pitch in game two as well.

Tucker Linder rounded out the five Herd batters with five hits, with two of his hits being doubles like Inskeep.

Andrew Zban's day at the plate can't be understated as well as he launched two long balls in five at-bats.

Every Marshall positon player to see action, reached base in at least one of the two games.

Phillip Hoffman picked up the win in the first game of the double header by going four innings, giving up just two hits and two walks as the only run he gave up being earned.

Ryan Falls picked up the win in game two after coming on in relief in the second inning. Falls pitched five frames giving up three runs on four hits and three walks and striking out four Eagles.

D'Andre Knight, Garett Priestly, Ryan Capuano, Robert Kwiatkowski, Chris Fryer and Michael Guerrero all threw scoreless innings after coming on from the bullpen, with Knight throwing two such innings with one in each game.

Bryan Callaly saw his first action of the season in game one pitching two innings of baseball.

UP NEXT
Marshall will begin conference play on Friday as it hosts FIU in a three-game series.
