Â
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Herd baseball (13-7, 3-1) took the series opener over Charlotte (10-11, 2-2), 12-6, on Friday night at Hayes Stadium in Charlotte.
Â
"Any time you can come out on Friday night and win like that it sets you up to win the series," 13th-year head coach Jeff Waggoner. "Shapiro went seven innings and threw 93 pitches, which is what you're supposed to do on Friday night. He put us in a spot to win and we played great defensively."
Â
Erik Rodriguez hit the first pitch of the game for a triple and Tucker Linder singled him home a couple of pitches later to put the Herd on top 1-0.
Â
Elvis Peralta then reached on a fielding error two batters later to bring home Linder and give Marshall a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
Â
After giving up two runs on three hits in the bottom of the second, Herd starting pitcher Joshua Shapiro went the next five innings without giving up a hit and giving up just one walk in those five innings. The senior righty tied his career-high of seven innings pitched and struck out six 49ers en route to his third win of the season.
Â
The Herd broke the game open in the fourth. Peralta led off the inning with a solo blast over the right-center fence. Rey Pastrana took a walk and Jaren Lovely smacked a single through the right side, before Raul Cabrera moved them over on a sacrifice bunt.
Â
Geordon Blanton then hit a sac fly to score Pastrana and make it a 4-2 ball game with two outs in the inning. Rodriguez kept the inning alive with a single to right to score Lovely.
Â
Rodriguez then stole second and third and was singled home by Lindor for his second RBI of the game. Hanon closed out the inning with a two-run homer to left as the Herd led 8-2 heading to the bottom of the fourth.
Â
Blanton scored on two-out wild pitch in the sixth and Rodriguez singled home a pair of two-out runs in the top of the eighth as the Herd led 11-2 heading to the bottom half of the inning.
Â
Charlotte hit a grand slam in the eighth, but Pastrana singled home Hanon in the top of the ninth and despite giving up a leadoff single, D'Andre Knight faced the minimum in the last half of the inning inducing a game-ending double play.
Â
Zac McNeel is scheduled to start game two on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
"I want Zac to be a Bulldog, attack the zone and give us a quality start," Waggoner commented on what he's looking for out of McNeel tomorrow.
Â

- Rodriguez hit the first pitch for a triple for a second-consecutive game.
- Peralta extended his hit streak to nine games.
