Marshall wins second C-USA series of the season
Box Score
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Four two-out runs and home runs from Reyanldo Pastrana and Zach Inskeep, helps lead Marshall baseball (14-7, 4-1 C-USA) past Charlotte in game two, 5-4, on Saturday to win its second Conference USA series of the season at Hayes Stadium.
"I believe they have a lot of confidence that they can hit anything with any count in the game," 13th-year head coach Jeff Waggoner said about the team's two-out hitting in the series. "Although we let them get in a grove a bit and didn't stay with a good approach, they found a way to get big hits. Rey had a huge home run to put us in the lead and Zach (Inskeep) hits a home run. Those are two huge hits for us. We also played good defense."
Zac McNeel gave up a run in each of the first innings, but settled in through the rest of his outing. McNeel went 3.2 innings, gave up five hits, four of which came in the first two innings, walked three batters and struck out four.
Marshall had a big fourth inning for the second day in a row with three runs. Elvis Peralta reached on an error by the pitcher to score Tucker Linder with two outs. Then Pastrana hit a two-run homer over the left-field wall to put Marshall up, 3-2.
Patrick Murphy came on in relief of McNeel with runners at second and third and two outs in the bottom of the fourth. After in an intentional walk to the load the bags, Murphy induced a ground ball for an out at third to end the inning.
The next inning, Linder smashed a ball to left center for a two-out triple and score Raul Cabrera to extend the Herd's lead to 4-2 after the top of the fifth.
After an easy bottom of the fifth for Murphy, the sixth appeared to be going down the same path as he retired the first two Charlotte batters in the inning. However, he couldn't seem to record the final out of the inning as 49ers recorded a double and drew three-straight walks to bring the game within one, 4-3.
Murphy concluded his outing retiring five of the last six batters he faced as came out in the bottom of eighth. The redshirt junior went 3.2 innings, giving up just the earned run on one hit and five walks as he struck out four 49ers.
Michael Guerrero came on in relief of Murphy and retired the two batters he saw in the bottom of the eighth for Marshall's 1-2-3 inning of the game.
Zach Inskeep took the momentum from the pitching staff in the eighth and turned it into a leadoff home run in the top of the ninth to give the Herd an insurance run and a 5-3 lead.
Despite an error, a hit and three walks, Guerrero closed out the game by giving up just one run and stranding the bases loaded with 49ers to end the ninth.
"Zac McNeel kept us close and Patrick Murphy did a great job in the middle innings. Then Michael Guerrero closed it. They're really good competitors, they believe in themselves and they have good stuff," Waggoner commented on the pitching staff getting out of jams today.
