Box Score
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Marshall baseball (14-8, 4-2 C-USA) falls short of a sweep of the Charlotte 49ers on Sunday afternoon, 8-5, as Charlotte struck for three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Tucker Linder got Marshall on top early with a one-out solo shot in the top of the first. Charlotte answered quickly in the bottom half of the inning, but Marshall wasted no time regaining the lead on a Raul Cabrera sacrifice fly to bring home Elvis Peralta and give the Herd a 2-1 lead.
The bottom of the second wasn't kind to Marshall as Charlotte grabbed three runs on four singles and a walk.
Herd starting pitcher Phillip Hoffman after 1.1 innings giving up four runs, three earned, on three hits and three walks. Hoffman struck out two batters.
Linder drove home his second RBI of the ballgame with single to left to score Geordon Blanton and cut the deficit to 4-3 after the third.
Then in the top of the fourth Marshall the two-out magic it had in the previous two games of the series as Erik Rodriguez scored Raul Cabrera with a single up the middle to knot the game at 4-4.
Feeding off the momentum of Herd reliever Ryan Falls' 1-2-3 fifth inning, Reynaldo Pastrana hit a moon-shot home run to left to lead off the sixth and help Marshall regain the lead, 5-4.
In the bottom of the sixth, Charlotte's Carson Johnson hit a ball to right with a runner on second that Jaren Lovely thought he caught on a dive, but was ruled to have dropped. The umpire ruled that due to the confusion run would not score and had to stay at third. Falls set down the next batter, his last of the game, to keep the Herd on top.
Falls exited the game after 4.2 innings of scoreless baseball striking out two and giving up just four hits and a walk.
D'Andre Knight came on in relief of Falls in the bottom of the seventh. Charlotte struck for five hits and three runs to take a 7-5 lead.
In top half of the eighth, Pastrana reached on a leadoff single. After Pastrana advanced to second on a wild pitch, Cabrera recorded a one-out single to shortstop to have runners at first and second. However, the Herd failed to bring one home as they were left at their respective bases to end the inning.
The 49ers scored an insurance run in the eighth over Robert Kwiatkowski and retired the Herd in order to finish the game in the ninth.
