HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Herd baseball (7-5) dominated Eastern Michigan in a doubleheader on Saturday taking both seven-inning matchups. Marshall won 6-1 in game one, before prevailing in game two, 8-5.
Â
GAME 1
The first game didn't have an ideal start for the Herd. The Eagles struck first by bringing home a run on a two-out single after committing an error earlier in the inning.
Â
Marshall would go on to cruise through the rest of the game by scoring six unanswered runs beginning with a pair of two-out RBI singles in the bottom of the third by Zach Inskeep and Rey Pastrana to give Marshall a 2-1 lead.
Â
Inskeep would knock home another run in the bottom of the fifth on a triple.
Â
The Herd would strike for its last three runs of the contest in the sixth with a solo homer by Tucker Linder, his first of the season, and RBI singles by Shane Hanon and Erik Rodriguez.
Â
Marshall starter Joshua Shapiro went five innings giving up just an unearned run on four hits and five walks while striking out five EMU hitters to record his second win of the season. Shapiro lowered his ERA to 0.38 in four starts this season.
Â
Patrick Murphy collected his first save of the season by pitching two scoreless innings.
Â
GAME 2
Much like game one, the Herd trailed 2-0 after the top of the first as the Eagles struck for a pair of unearned runs.
Â
Marshall battled back the next half inning starting with a single by Inskeep that scored Rodriguez after an error by the EMU center fielder. A couple batters later, Linder brought home a pair of runs on a two-out double and Elvis Peralta then brought home Linder to put the Herd up 4-2.
Â
The next inning, Inskeep belted a two-out two-run homer to extend Marshall's lead to 6-2. The bomb was Inskeep's fourth home run of the season.
Â
Linder then hit his second home run of the day in the bottom of the third.
Â
EMU benefited from a three-run homer in the top of the fifth, but Pastrana drove home Jaren Lovely with a double in the bottom half of the inning to put the Herd on top by the eventual final score of 8-5.
Â
Zac McNeel earned his first win of the season. McNeel went 4.1 innings giving up four runs, two earned, on three hits and three walks. The righty struck out six batters in his start.
Â
Sam Boone recorded his first save of the season by pitching the seventh inning and allowing no base runners in the final inning
