CARBONDALE, Ill. – Marshall baseball (3-5) fell in in game one of a three-game series at No. 27 Southern Illinois (15-1), 10-4, on Friday as it made three errors in the loss.
Marshall was set down in order in the top of the first, but Herd starting pitcher Cody Sharp answered by putting the Salukis down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.
SIU set the Herd down again in the top of the second and then utilized an error to score a pair of unearned runs off Sharp as Marshall trailed 2-0 after two.
Marshall did not wait long to strike back as designated hitter Cole Williams and left fielder Devin Ward led off the third with singles. After a pair of outs, second baseman Travis Sankovich doubled down the left-field line to bring home both runners and tie the game 2-2.
However, Brad Hudson recorded a double to begin the bottom of the third and was brought home on a groundout by Tristan Peters as the Salukis regained the advantage 3-2.
Marshall's bats were humming to start the fourth as third baseman Peter Hutzal and right fielder Cyrus Grimes collected back-to-back singles. Catcher Kyle Schaefer reached on a fielder's choice with Hutzal advancing to third and Grimes being put out at second. After Schaefer stole second Cole Williams reached on an error by the Salukis and scored Hutzal to tie the game 3-3.
Chad Heiner came on in relief of Sharp in the bottom of fourth, worked around an error to hold SIU scoreless in the inning and then stranded a pair of runners in the bottom of the fifth to keep the game 3-3.
With one out in the top of the sixth, Josh Pigozzo pinch hit for Grimes and smoked a double down the left-field line. Pigozzo then advanced to third on a single by Schaefer and then reached home on a Williams single to give Marshall its first lead of the game.
But the lead would be short lived for the Herd as SIU scored the final seven runs of the contest with three in the sixth, two in the seventh and two in the eighth.
