Dotson Breaks 18-Year Old School Record In Herd’s Outdoor Opener At Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Marshall track and field finished the program's 2021 outdoor season opener, the 49er Classic, Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center.
Thundering Herd athletes won three events, headlined by freshman Tori Dotson's win in the 800 meter with a time of 2:11.51. In her first collegiate outdoor meet, she broke the Marshall school record in the outdoor 800m which had been untouched since 2003, held by Stephanie Eastman (2:12.39).
"We had a good opening weekend," head coach Jeff Small said. "It was highlighted by Tori Dotson's school record victory in the 800 meters and victories in both hurdle races by Safiyyah Mitchell and Mikah Alleyne. We also had great performances by our young throws group led by Rebecca Merritt."
Graduate senior Safiyyah Mitchell won the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.06. She competed in her first meet of the season for Marshall after entering this year with eligibility remaining in outdoor track and field only.
Sophomore Mikah Alleyne won the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:02.83, picking up where she left off after a strong indoor season.
Graduate senior Danere'a White finished second in the 200m with a time of 25.16 and freshman Janea Gardner finished sixth in the event.
Freshman Rebecca Merritt had a strong weekend across three throwing events. She finished second in the discus, second in the shot put and fifth in the hammer. Brooke Burns recorded a pair of top-10 finishes, including a third place finish in the discus.
Chloe Cahill made her collegiate debut, finishing second in the javelin with a top throw of 31.01 meters (101 feet, 9 inches).
Other second place finishes came from Lauren Zaglifa in the pole vault and Taylor Robinson in the 100m hurdles. Erica Murphy finished third in the 400m with an outdoor personal record.
