Herd Baseball's Offense Erupts In 10-8 Win Over FIU

Grimes leads with 4 RBI
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall baseball (6-22, 2-14 C-USA) defeated FIU (14-21, 6-10 C-USA) by a final score of 10-8 Sunday afternoon at the Kennedy Center. The win for the Thundering Herd secured a 2-2 series split with the Panthers.
In a nearly four hour contest, the teams combined for 18 runs and 22 hits in 67 at-bats. The Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 lead through 4.5 innings.
In the bottom half of the fifth inning, Marshall scored four runs on five hits. Jordon Billups drove in Zach Inskeep for the first run on a RBI single. Billups along with Zach Gardiner scored on a Travis Sankovich single to give Marshall a 3-2 lead, a lead which the team would never concede.
Cyrus Grimes drove in Geordon Blanton on an RBI single later in the inning to extend the lead, 4-2.
An inning later, with the bases loaded, Grimes cleared the bases on a 3 RBI double with the bases loaded to give Marshall a 7-3 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, with the score 8-5, Sankovich hit his first home run as a member of the Thundering Herd, a solo shot to right field to give Marshall a 9-5 lead. Later in the inning, Blanton scored on a throwing error, the second Marshall run to score off a Panthers error, to give Marshall a 10-5 lead.
After a ninth inning rally for FIU, the Panther comeback fell short as D'Andre Knight induced a pop out to Inskeep at first base for the game's final out.
Josh Zeboskey (1-0) earned the win on the mound for Marshall. He entered the contest in the top of the fifth, with at the time a 2-0 FIU lead, with runners on the corners and one out and came out of the inning unscathed. In total he pitched 1.2 hitless innings with one strikeout.
Zac Addkison received no decision making the start on the mound. He pitched 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and no runs, striking out three.
Michael Guerrero pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
Offensively, Inskeep led with three hits. He co-led with three runs scored along with Blanton (0-for-2, 3 BB). Billups, Sankovich and Grimes each had two hits, with Grimes tallying four RBI.
Ryan Leitch and Luke Edwards each had one hit. Marshall hitters drew nine walks.

Marshall travels to Ruston, Louisiana to take on the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in a four-game series. First pitch for Friday's game is set for 7 p.m. EST/6 p.m. CST.
